This is a note from some of my earlier talks or conversations, with educators and I gathered some valuable points on education as educators see it - whether as teachers, administrators or principals. This is an excerpt from some of the conversations with educators who care to bring about a change in way learning is today. -Sushmita Chatterjee The Educators Viewpoint These were some of the areas that the teachers felt that needed to change . Teachers need to be mentors today and play a larger role than they had probably done when we were children . There are many controversial concepts , theories about education and learning . However, learning is essentially a growing domain as part of and beyond the process of casual to formal education. Educators feel Learning and Education are two different areas and need to be addressed differently .Learning is not limited to schools only today and can range from a variety of traditional to non traditional skills and knowledge areas. Most teachers are still trying to find a balance to engage students in various ways. Many teachers are trying to innovate and engage the students in classroom motivation using gamification, badges, rewards, level up education including leader boards and quests. However this is limited. In United States and many different countries there is a large focus on form of compliance to a standard course or plan and many educators feel that “Compliance to a course or curriculum does not equate to learning”. However the form of compliance learning that exists today will not go away unless there is a process established by higher education institutions to either de-link grades with proficiency or create additional requirements so that quality students from high schools are filtered to higher education institutions, who have attained merit based on real knowledge or learning not grades based progression. There is lot of stress among students to achieve or succeed always. Not getting the grades that they targeted, or fear of parents create complexes in students .Failure is a bad word. Educators felt that The freedom to fail is important. Like in a gaming environment, if you fail, you can try again. And yet there is an abundance of examples in real world of famous personalities, scientists, businessmen who have succeeded after numerous attempts of failure. Teachers understand the use of social media, chats, and many teachers allow senior children at college/school to use their cellphones in classroom in silent modes. Most teachers like to use their own set of tools. Some teachers love the old blackboard and chalk, Many teacher use special tools and also are part of Google Certified teacher’s program . Developing social and emotional skills is important as we all understand but, is that implemented well in schools? Educators felt that there is a growing communication gap between children and parents. VR and AR are new areas that teachers are extremely interested to know and learn. The ability to engage students in a meaningful way is a primary concern in classrooms today and old methods or techniques do not work with all kind of learners. Lot of teachers have contributed to creating content that have helped understand concepts and theories and it is not a distant past when teachers may have the ability to model learning "experiences" that can create positive learning outcomes.
